There’s a lot more to like than pizza at Fired Up Coal Oven Pizzeria in Palm Bay, though the coal oven is bound to attract some pizza fans. The secret, our server told a friend and me, is that the 800-degree heat makes for a nice, crispy crust.
We started, however, with one of the appetizers — fried calamari ($6.99), served nice and hot with a flavorful homemade marinara sauce. Then we moved on to the pizza. We chose Pizza Margarita, from the specialty pie menu. The 12-inch is $12.99; the 16-inch is $15.99. You also can get white pizza, meat pizza, Hawaiian pizza and more.
Among the lunch specials are a $4.99 personal pizza; four Italian sliders for $4.99 with choices including meatball, sausage and turkey; and a half-sandwich, fries and drink for $4.99 (yes, the drink can be a draft beer).
The crust, as promised, was crispy, and I also liked that it was quite thin. The taste of fresh tomatoes and fresh basil popped in one’s mouth, and we also enjoyed the fresh mozzarella cheese, though we wanted a little more. We were obligated to try the desserts, since they are made in-house. My friend’s tiramisu ($4.99) had a slightly drunken, very rich flavor, while my carrot cake ($3.99) was moist and wonderful, with a fabulous cream-cheese icing. It might be worth coming here just for the desserts.
However, there’s more to enjoy. On the menu, get salads, wings, sandwiches and kids’ items. The eatery serves beer and wine.
It’s also spacious, with an inviting color scheme and plenty of tables and bar seating, along with lots of HD televisions to watch the game du jour. Check it out, and get some cake, too.
