Big Island Burritos is a place to kick back and fill up during or after beach time, at least as far as we could tell from the folks dropping by in their surf duds. The unassuming, casual Indialantic eatery, tucked into a strip mall, offers big portions for reasonable prices. While there are soups, salads, soft or crunchy tacos, nachos, dips, beer and wine on the menu, the centerpiece has to be the bevy of burritos.
There are variations for just about everyone, from the $5.50 Extreme Burrito (grilled or jerk chicken or taco meat, white or yellow rice, pinto or black beans, cheese, chipotle sour cream, pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, with the option of adding fajita beef, pork or mahi for an extra buck) to the $7 Sunset (grilled mahi, pinto or black beans, yellow rice, cheese, lettuce, cabbage, tropical fruit salsa, all served with mango-papaya sauce and chips).
We started with your basic Chips-N-Guac ($5.50), which came with a ton of chips, some very citrusy guac, pico de gallo and sour cream. I had the feeling it probably should have been assembled in advance, as dipping them individually was less than satisfactory. Assemble at will.
With his Shock Top beer ($2.75), my husband ordered Il Cubano ($6.50), a hearty burrito starring moist and savory pulled pork, with white rice, black beans, cheese, lettuce and cabbage. Enhancing the presentation were black bean sauce, sour cream and pico de gallo, and the accompanying chips.
I chose the Cabo Burrito ($6). It’s meatless — with pinto or black beans, white or yellow rice, cheese, chipotle sour cream, pico, guacamole and lettuce — but nonetheless a huge, filling beast in a soft flour tortilla. It was quite good, but I couldn’t finish it.
The place seems family-friendly; there are kids’ meals for $4, including kid-size nachos with taco meat or chicken, a kid-size burrito and a kids’ bowl with rice, beans, cheese, and taco meat or chicken. Come as you are.
