She & Him, 'A Very She & Him Christmas'
Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward present Yuletide as the Beach Boys saw it—where white Christmases are purely hypothetical and the holidays are backlit by SoCal sun. The result is a charming release, which is a pitch-perfect mix of WASP and rock staples; there's a bit of Brian Wilson ("Little Saint Nick"), rat pack ("Baby It's Cold Outside") and traditional ("The Christmas Song"). With Deschanel's bewitchingly lilting vocals and Ward's twangy guitar, it's hard not to be ensnared in holiday spirit. Minor quibble: We enjoy Deschanel and Will Ferrell's pass at "Baby It's Cold Outside" in "Elf" more than the slightly frenetic version on this album. On the other hand, the two do Leroy Anderson proud with the bouncing "Sleigh Ride." –LM
