Best Supporting Actress of 1997
Nominees: Kim Basinger ("L.A. Confidential"), Joan Cusack ("In & Out"), Minnie Driver ("Good Will Hunting"), Julianne Moore ("Boogie Nights"), Gloria Stuart ("Titanic")
And the award went to: Basinger, playing a high-class hooker with a heart of gold in 1950s L.A.
But it should've been: Moore. Lots of funky things went on during this particular year. Critical darling "L.A. Confidential" faced the "Titanic" juggernaut and was a surefire loser in all their head-to-head competitions—except best supporting actress. As a likely consolation prize for the excellent movie, Basinger's modest performance won. Big mistake. Moore deserved to triumph for her complex, profoundly affecting turn as a '70s porn star battling for custody of her son while serving as a nurturing mother hen to her adoptive porn family.
